Unexpected circumstances present parents with challenges in caring for their children. Being prepared helps whether the electricity is out or you’ve been stranded unexpectedly.
PLAN NOT TO PANIC
Panic is a great danger in an emergency – as mentioned in the article: RULE OF 3'S TO SURVIVE. Children will pick up on your emotion. Children will be calmed by a confident, prepared adult.
RELEVANCE OF ROUTINE
Look for creative ways to implement a daily routine for the sake of your children. This will give them a sense of stability and show that you are still able to function as parent and protector.
PASTIMES
When you find yourself isolated, the ability to amuse oneself is a necessity. Batteries and generators won’t likely be available for games. Craft supplies – glue, scissors, tape, paper, play dough, markers, crayons, etc. – are valuable items to keep handy. In the event your children are lacking electronic entertainment, being familiar with these ‘low tech’ options will be a comfort. It is also wise to keep educational materials stocked (items such as work books, flash cards, pencils, reference books, etc.) in the event you find organized schooling is no longer an option.
PREPARE FOR GOOD HEALTH
Your dental health and other health conditions should be tended while you have access to remedies and treatments. Rather than neglect those annoying aches and pains, take steps to remedy them so they aren’t a factor in an emergency. Remember to keep any necessary medicines in stock. Get into the habit of observing the sleeping, eating and toilet patterns of your family members so that you will detect illness early and be able to deal with it proactively. Train yourself to be observant of the impact circumstances are having on your loved ones. Otherwise, it will be easy to remain focused on your own challenges to the exclusion of others.
CULTIVATE AN APPRECIATION FOR REAL FOODS
Tomorrow’s health is affected by today’s food choices. Without proper training children could refuse to consume proper amounts of nutritious foods. Taste buds can be trained to appreciate a variety of tastes and textures available in real foods, but this can be difficult if the pallet has been compromised with processed foods and sugars. Take time to introduce new foods gradually in the diet. Basic real food preparation and nutrition should become hot topics for learning and teaching in your home.
BABIES AND INFANTS
Babies don’t require a lot of equipment in order to be healthy and safe In an emergency. Just as yesterday’s mothers didn’t require music players, pacifiers, disposable diapers, bouncy seats, carriers, cribs and other accoutrements for infant care, neither are they necessities today. Babies need to be kept fed, clean, dry and warm.
The ability to breastfeed is a skill, but it is a skill that can be learned. Breastfeeding is worth the time investment as it is beneficial to both mother and infant. This can help insure that the smallest family member has a ready supply of nourishment. Keep a good supply of formula stocked and on hand for bottle-fed babies.
Infants need help regulating body temperature and should be protected from extremes of heat and cold. Keep babies in the shade during the summer. Employ an umbrella for protection. In the winter, dressing little ones in layers protects them from the cold. Zippered fleece sleepers can be placed over long thermal underwear for nighttime warmth. Sharing a bed with several persons will also help keep everyone warm at night. During the day, wool socks and a hat help little ones keep warm along with a zippered fleece jacket.
SANITATION
Daily baths won’t be possible if water is in short supply or if temperatures are very cool. Select the warmest area you can find and show children how to quickly wash their face, hands, genitals and feet each day. Before meals, have them wash their hands. This is important for healthy hygiene in rustic conditions. Explain to older children the importance of a well positioned latrine and show them how to dispose of waste well away from living areas.
SKILLS
Children become more confident as they gain life skills. Teaching your children how to shop, stock a pantry, pitch a tent, build a camp fire, sew, repair small engines, perform CPR, first aid, garden and swim is an investment. Knowing self defense, what to do in a fire drill and practicing other scenarios builds confidence. These children have a plan and aren’t as likely to panic.
Making preparedness a part of your life will help your children avoid panic when moments are crucial. Rather than face the unknown with desperation, you will have a plan and your little ones will know what to expect. These measures help families face uncertainty with strength.
